TY - JOUR T1 - Conceptualizing a Blockchain-Based Compliance Infrastructure for Frozen Food Cold Chains AU - Wei Zhang AU - Chen Hui AU - Michael Tan JF - Journal of Intelligent Agriculture and Food Systems Y1 - 2023 VL - 2 IS - 1 SP - 59 N2 - Guaranteeing end-to-end visibility, certified conformity, and uninterrupted temperature control in frozen food logistics remains an enduring obstacle, compounded by siloed oversight tools, hands-on inspection routines, and exposure to information falsification. This paper puts forward a blueprint for a blockchain-anchored conformity framework that resolves these difficulties by fusing continuous Internet of Things (IoT) sensing, authorized blockchain-based recordkeeping, and automated conformance enforcement via smart contracts. Adopting a Design Science Research (DSR) approach, the inquiry zeroes in on the formative stages (challenge scoping, goal setting, and artefact blueprinting) to deliver a methodical grounding for subsequent testing and appraisal. The envisioned construct is arranged across three mutually reliant strata: (1) a data acquisition layer that secures uninterrupted and safeguarded sensor-fed tracking; (2) a data storage layer that harnesses blockchain for indelible logs and open verifiability; and (3) an application layer that weaves in smart contracts for hands-off compliance activation along with dashboards for actor engagement. By reinterpreting statutory conformity mandates into a compartmentalized, blockchain-centric blueprint, this investigation fortifies the conceptual basis of decentralized governance apparatuses within agri-food networks. The formulated framework codifies design maxims capable of shaping parallel provenance systems in other heavily audited supply networks. While practical corroboration is yet to come, the architectural outline supplies a platform for later DSR rounds and enriches design intelligence in the arena of digital conformity infrastructures.
